First FCSO detainee graduates from WAGE program

Thursday, June 9, 2016, detainee Alberto Giarratana graduated from the Workforce Alliance for Growth in the Economy (WAGE), offered by the Conway Adult Education Center.  Mr. Giarratana received certificates in employability, industrial, and customer service I.  Mr. Giarratana has been attending class Monday through Thursday, two hours at a time.  There are approximately 15 detainees enrolled in this free program.

Included in the photographs are Mr. Giarratana, Kathryn Rasure, and Ruth Ann Williams.  Below you will find the original release from 2/24/16.

The Faulkner County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) and the Conway Adult Education Center (CAEC) have partnered together to offer Faulkner County Detention Center (FCDC) detainees, the opportunity to receive employment & computer training skills, as well as the GED while incarcerated. For several years now, Faulkner County has had a steady increase in the number of repeat offenders.

Major John Randall, with the Faulkner County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) states, “Recidivism is one of the most fundamental concepts in criminal justice. It refers to a person’s relapse into criminal behavior, often after the person receives sanctions or undergoes intervention for a previous crime”.  “Over 1600 of FCDC repeat offenders do not have a high school diploma or GED”, says Randall.

The FCSO partnership with Conway Adult Education’s WAGE™ (Workforce Alliance for Growth in the Economy) Job Readiness and GED Programs is an effort to decrease recidivism in Faulkner County by training and educating male and female detainees for their transition back to the community.   A full instructional computer lab and classroom have been set up and are fully operational inside FCDC. Adult Ed Instructors teach Monday – Friday to help offenders update their skills by earning WAGE™ Certificates and/or study GED & Basic Education subject areas. With this type of instruction, collaboration and support in place between the FCSO and CAEC staff, progress will be made towards helping offenders find jobs and become productive citizens.

We would like to thank Conway Corporation and Virco Manufacturing Services for donating free internet, tables and chairs.
