Women's History Month
03/01/2023
Today, March 1, 2023, marks the beginning of Women's History Month. The history of this month can be traced back to 1978, when Women's History Week was first organized by a school district in Sonoma, California. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued a Presidential Proclamation declaring the week of March 8, corresponding with International Women's Day, to be National Women's History Week. Following this, the National Women's History Project successfully petitioned Congress to expand the week to a full month. Since 1987, the entire month of March has been recognized as Women's History Month, a time dedicated to learning about women's contributions to culture and history. Each year, the National Women's History Alliance designates a theme. The theme this year is "Celebrating Women Who Tell Our Stories", and it recognizes women who have been active in all forms of media.
