Happy Independence Day, Faulkner County! On July 4, 1776, the Second Continental Congress unanimously adopted the Declaration of Independence, announcing the colonies' separation from Great Britain. Philadelphians marked the first anniversary of American independence with a spontaneous celebration, and, by the 1870s, the Fourth of July was the most important secular holiday on the calendar. Interestingly, Congress did not pass legislation declaring Independence Day as a federal holiday until June 28, 1870. Today, July 4, 2026, we are proud to celebrate our 250th anniversary of independence!
